Living and Working in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is approximately 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Known as the “American Riviera” because of its similarity to Mediterranean geography and climate, the city offers spectacular views of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the ocean, and the Channel Islands. It is a popular tourist and resort destination and its economy includes non-profit, education, technology, and health sectors. Local colleges, universities, and healthcare facilities are major employers and bring a wealth of opportunities and resources to the community. Santa Barbara residents enjoy the best of many worlds: a friendly, small-town atmosphere with laid-back California charm, a beautiful natural environment, a city preserved and protected from overdevelopment, and the entertainment and culture of a sophisticated city. The city boasts numerous performing art venues, including several historic theaters and the Santa Barbara Bowl, an amphitheater nestled in a picturesque canyon. Mission Santa Barbara is maintained as an active place of worship, a tourist attraction, and national historic landmark. Onshore breezes create an idyllic climate with comfortable temperatures, warm winters, and cool summers. Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, the area provides ready access to the unspoiled wilderness in the rugged Santa Ynez Mountains, as well as miles of pristine, sandy Pacific Ocean beaches. Traveling is convenient with major airlines serving Santa Barbara Airport, a centrally located Amtrak station, and U.S. Route 101 as the major north-south highway.
